In a fascinating behind-the-scenes account of Mitt Romney’s appearance at a Univision town hall this week, BuzzFeed reports that the Romney campaign bused in rowdy activists from across the state and demanded that one of the co-anchors retape his introduction of Romney:

While introducing Romney at the top of the broadcast, Salinas’s co-anchor, Jorge Ramos, noted that the Republican candidate had agreed to give the network 35 minutes, and that Obama had agreed to a full hour the next night. Ramos then invited the audience to welcome Romney to the stage — but the candidate didn’t materialize.

“It was a very awkward moment, believe me,” Salinas said.

Apparently, Romney took issue with the anchors beginning the broadcast that way, said Salinas, and he refused to go on stage until they re-taped the introduction. (One Republican present at the taping said Romney “threw a tantrum.”)

If you are trying with all your might to fight a narrative that you live a life of entitlement that is unavailable to the 99% folks, stories like this are not helping your cause.

It makes you wonder how Mitt would react to waiting in a long line at the DMV, or having to talk to multiple people at his insurance company to understand why a certain procedure wasn’t covered. These are things that people have to go through every day.

Now, on the flip-side, I’m not sure that President Obama has everyday-people-problems now, but either he has in the past or he has sincere empathy towards those that do face those issues.

This connection-with-real-people battle is a pretty big issue nowadays in Presidential elections, and has been since Bush v Gore, and maybe earlier. It’s a battle that Mitt Romney’s campaign has been fighting since its inception, and doesn’t seem to be getting any better at it.

Watching their wives speak

No additional commentary necessary.

I’m not sure the Romney picture is valid. Her speech was only 22 minutes long, and he joined her onstage immediately after. And after a quick search (romney grandkids pizza) this picture was watching the convention the day after Ann Romney spoke.
